Mark 11:30  The Message

“Jesus said, ’Love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.”

What do you know?

Study the Bible like a soldier on a mission, not a scholar on a sabbatical.                           Mark Driscoll

1 Corinthians 2:2

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Above All

“Christ is not valued at all, unless He is valued above all.      –  Augustine

1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20  (NIV)

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

“Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival.”

A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God

The Desire of your Heart

Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.

                                                                                       – Confucius

Live Passionately

Jeremiah 20:9
But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

Passion for God

  1. is reflected in the decisions that you make

James 1:5  (NIV)

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

  1. 2.     Shapes your priorities

1 Corinthians 2:2

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  1. 3.     Pushes you ahead

Galatians 5:7  NIV

You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?

2 Timothy 4:7  (NIV)

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Hebrews 12  (NIV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

1 Corinthians 9:24  (NIV)

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

  1. 4.     Breaks your heart

Romans 9:3  (MSG)

At the same time, you need to know that I carry with me at all times a huge sorrow. It’s an enormous pain deep within me, and I’m never free of it. I’m not exaggerating—Christ and the Holy Spirit are my witnesses. It’s the Israelites . . . If there were any way I could be cursed by the Messiah so they could be blessed by him, I’d do it in a minute. They’re my family. I grew up with them. They had everything going for them—family, glory, covenants, revelation, worship, promises, to say nothing of being the race that produced the Messiah, the Christ, who is God over everything, always. Oh, yes!

  1. 5.     Restores your soul

Psalm 3:3

But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

Here are my top 10 favorite quotes about following Jesus and the Christian life:

  1. “Christian character cannot be formed without a kind of thinking that strains the soul.” (Richard Lints, The Fabric of Theology)
  2. “Your theology, your thoughts about God, are your most important thoughts because they will determine everything else in your life.” (Dr. Richard Bingham)
  3. “Theology without worship is empty, but worship without theology is blind.” (Kevin Vanhoozer)
  4. “Comparison is the kiss of death of gratitude.” (Pastor Michael Easley)
  5. “He loves Thee too little who loves anything together with Thee, which he loves not for Thy sake.” (Augustine, Confessions, Book 10, Chapter xxix)
  6. “Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief. It is not surprising that prayer malfunctions when we try to make it a domestic intercom to call upstairs for more comforts in the den.” (Pastor John Piper)
  7. “Christ is not valued at all, unless He is valued above all.” (Augustine)
  8. “Nothing is more important for mature Christian discipleship than a fresh, clear, true vision of the authentic Jesus.” (John Stott)
  9. “The man who accepts discipline at the hand of God as something designed by his heavenly Father for his good will cease to feel resentful and rebellious; he has stilled and quieted his soul, which thus provides fertile soil for the cultivation of a righteous life.” (F.F. Bruce in his commentary on Hebrews 12:4-11)
  10. “Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival.” (A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God)

Matthew 6:24-33  NIV

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.  25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

The Strange Kingdom

Luke 16:15  New International Version

He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

John 18:36 (NLT)

Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.

Matthew 5:10-12  (NIV)

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Jealous Kingdom

As every divided kingdom falls, so every mind divided between many studies confounds and saps itself.                – Leonardo da Vinci

At the Home of Martha and Mary

Luke 10:38

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

The Contemporary Kingdom

Luke 23:42-43  (NLT)

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

The Invisible Kingdom

Luke 17:20

One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?”

Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. 21 You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you.

The Active Kingdom

1 Thesselonians 2:12

We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

The amount of time we spend with Jesus – meditating on His Word and His majesty, seeking His face – establishes our fruitfulness in the kingdom.    –Charles Stanley

Matthew 5:3 NLT

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,

for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

4 God blesses those who mourn,

    for they will be comforted.

5 God blesses those who are humble,

for they will inherit the whole earth.

6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,

    for they will be satisfied.

7 God blesses those who are merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,

    for they will see God.

9 God blesses those who work for peace,

for they will be called the children of God.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right,

for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

God’s plan for enlarging His kingdom is so simple – one person telling another about the Savior. Yet we’re busy and full of excuses. Just remember, someone’s eternal destiny is at stake. The joy you’ll have when you meet that person in heaven will far exceed any discomfort you felt in sharing the gospel.

    – Charles Stanley

The Eternal Kingdom

Revelation  11:15

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven:

“The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.

Peter comes up with the right question:

John 6:67

“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.

68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
